The largest battles in the Šiauliai district took place in this place, in the Skobiškės forest.
"45-2. April 29, at 5 a.m. in the Šiauliai district, Kuršėnai village, in the Skobiškės forest (now Šiauliai district municipality), the Šiauliai district department of the NKVD, having previously received data about the location of the detachment led by Pranas Petryla and having drawn up an action plan, carried out a military-chekist operation. 450 soldiers of the Leningrad Front rear guard border detachment and 80 soldiers of the NKVD internal troops participated in it. The military group encountered 50-60 partisans, who had prepared for defense in advance and set up 4 bunkers, fiercely resisted. The fighting lasted 8 hours. 25 partisans were killed during the operation " (information from "Western Lithuanian Partisan Area. Atlas").
There is a cross, benches, and an information stand at the memorial site. It is maintained by the Kuršėnai regional branch of the State Enterprise State Forest Enterprise.
In 2025, the Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center installed a typical memorial sign at this location. On May 18, 2025 – the Day of Honoring Partisans, Unity of the Army and Society – the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Skobiškės was commemorated and a stone memorial sign was unveiled, testifying to this historical event and its participants.
